A few months ago, Copperleaf™ was named one of Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures by Waterstone Human Capital. This award recognizes best-in-class Canadian organizations for having cultures that enhance performance and sustain a competitive advantage.

I had the privilege of representing Copperleaf at the Corporate Culture Summit and awards ceremony which took place in Toronto a couple of months ago. At the summit, I was able to learn what leaders of other winning companies are doing to align culture and success. Some of the key themes discussed included:
- embracing equality, diversity, and inclusion for a competitive advantage
- valuing the direct link between improvement in culture and business performance
- creating an open, feedback-oriented company culture
I also participated in a panel discussion about the “leadership attributes of winning corporate cultures”. One of the questions I was asked is: why do I spend the time to personally deliver the 3-hour training sessions for all employees on Copperleaf’s culture? I thought it might be interesting to share my thoughts on this more broadly, because these sessions are really important! Here’s why:
- As Copperleaf continues its aggressive growth trajectory, we want to ensure that new and current employees understand and feel ownership of our culture. It is a key component of our company and should be owned by all employees, and driven by the CEO.
- Our culture was developed and implemented by the entire team, and therefore reflects the values that are significant to us. Every employee is an ambassador of our culture and represents our shared values to our customers, partners, shareholders, and the greater community at large.
- It is vital that our culture aligns with our strategic objectives, and the CEO acts as a link between culture and how we execute on our strategy to be successful.
- Last, but not least, I think it’s important to take the time to meet all of our new employees and also for them to spend time with the leadership team so that the doors of communication are always open.
I’m always interested in learning about what other organizations are doing to build and reinforce their culture. If you have any feedback or ideas, I’d love to hear from you!
This is the first time Copperleaf has received this award and I’m truly thrilled because I believe we’ve successfully created an environment where our people can collaborate, learn, create innovative solutions, and continually push the limits of what’s possible.
And finally, as part of the gala celebration, each winning company was tasked with making a video that showcases its culture. Winners in the “growth” category were asked to create a short video in the style of an action movie trailer.
